How do you dance if you are not allowed to dance?
In Iran, dancing is officially forbidden. Since the Islamic Revolution, all dance companies in Iran had to close their doors. Many dancers and choreographers have fled abroad. Those who still live there have to be resourceful. How do they keep this art form alive? Theater maker Nastaran Razawi Khorasani is presenting a dance show about censorship: ‘This is not a dance’. What can you show, and what not? As music and lighting are jointly building momentum, she tries to rein in her dancing body.
In preparation of the show, Nastaran spoke to choreographers and dancers living in Iran. How do they deal with the dance ban? How do they practice their profession, what dangers are they facing, what freedoms are they fighting for? ‘This is not a dance’ is a tribute to the body that wants to move. A tribute to the art that just has to be created, in whatever form.
